Andy – It really seems like alot of final Mock Drafts around the web are onboard with the Purke to STL theme. I couldn’t be happier! Not to say that is what they do but it appears the rumblings that are being heard and gut feelings by many is if Purke is there the Cards are likely to take him. Also I know they were pretty impressed with Grichuk when they brought him in for his workout so I would not be surprised at all if they took him in the 2nd. I also like the talk I have heard from some on Robbie Shields as a 3rd Round pick for the Cards. Underrated SS from FL Southern. I noticed you don’t have him on your Mock….What are you thoughts on this kid? The things I have heard and ready about him would make me believe he is 3rd Round material. Thanks Andy…look forward to the chat your doing during the draft!
I had a tough time leaving Shields off. I liked him before the season, but like everyone else, I am incredibly disappointed in his spring campaign. Enormously disappointed. As such, other college middle infielders have jumped him, and while there’s a good chance someone calls his name in the third, there’s also a solid chance he falls to day two. It all depends on his asking price, if he has one, and whether a team wants someone affordable in the third before working an overnight deal for their fourth rounder.

With Heathcott now apparently demanding $2M, do you think he’ll last until the second round if he falls out of the first, since unsigned supplemental picks aren’t subject to compensation?
Can you explain the reasoning to me of Wheeler over Scheppers for me. If it is about his injury history and medical reports, I understand, but if not that what else would make picking the prep arm over the college arm a wise move?
It’s all about the health. Scheppers would be giving Dustin Ackley a run for his money at #2 if he was completely 100% healthy without a past history of injury.
I really like it for the Cubs. I’m okay with Pollock, I love Smith’s potential (and think he’ll be a better pitcher than OF), and think Volz could be a steal in the 3rd round.
Something I just realized that is a sign of where the higher end (1st round) strength is located.
2 of the top 12 picks in your mock are pitchers
7 of the top 25 are pitchers
14 of the top 32 picks (1st round) are pitchers.
I guess this proved that the top end of this draft is heavy in pitching (both college and HS) and the talent of college hitters especially is lacking.

Ive come to accept Storen/Jenkins
But I would hope we would go higher upside/more athletic than Matthes. Especailly having Franklin in for a workout he would be a great pick. Also Von Rosenburg and Givens would work well
At 81 I would be ok with Tottle, but again, given the premium put on middle of the field defenders we apparently have, I think Ryan Jackson and Grichuck would be great picks, or even Glaessman
Would love to see Kendall Volz or Eric Smith to make it through til 112

BTW – KLaw just announced Pirates have a predraft deal done for Tony Sanchez (C for BC). Nothing against Sanchez but it appears they are going cheap again as he clearly is not close to the #4 best player available in this draft IMO.
Saw that and thanks for the heads up. Neal Huntington just staked his job on the combination of being able to sign Sano and Sanchez having a good pro debut.
If they snag Sano along with Sanchez this made a bit more sense. But I still think they need higher ceiling pitchers in their system and even if you had to pay a bit more it would be worth it IMO.
Very random question. At pick #74 you have Steven Matz going to Milwaukee. Do you really think that he can be picked that high in the draft coming out of high school only throwing an average velocity (88-92) and with only two pitches. I only ask because he attended my high school and I have been following his progress.
That’s a legit question. Matz has actually had major helium lately, and there’s been one spot saying he’s a dark horse first round candidate. He reached 94 this spring, and already throwing a change helps his stock. His curve is also nice. His upside is pretty high, especially considering his cold weather pedigree.
