  1. What’s the deal with Hamblin?

    Comment by R.A. Wagman | June 10, 2009 | Reply

    • There’s apparently something strange going on with Hamblin. Here’s the coach talking about him shortly. He doesn’t actually comment on Hamblin, but says, “The only guy not drafted that I thought should have gone a bit higher was Miles (Hamblin). There are some reasons behind that I’m not going to comment on, though.” He wasn’t drafted today, either, so something’s going on, and I bet he either ends up at Ole Miss or he’s in trouble of some kind.

  3. How do you compare yourself to what they actually did?

    Comment by Max | June 10, 2009 | Reply

    • I think I got some more recognizable upside guys, and I didn’t spend the majority of my budget on my first pick, like they did with Purke. I was using their picks as a budgeting guideline, though, so I expected to spend something around $9 million total, and I think I spread the talent out pretty evenly. They have a few high-ceiling guys, though, that could explode into something much better than my package.

  4. How much do you think it would cost you to sign your shadow draftees?

    Comment by DeJay | June 11, 2009 | Reply

    • Scheppers: $3MM
      Stassi: $1.5MM
      Gould: $1MM
      Matthes: $400K
      Dyson: $1MM
      Malm: $1MM
Hamblin: Little to none (wasn’t drafted)
      Buch: $150K
      Tullis: $150K
      Perez: $600K

The rest would be between $50K and $100K, though Boyd probably won’t sign at all. Total there is right around $9 million, which was my budget.

  5. Are you going to have any kind of draft recap for the actual draft?

    Comment by Max | June 11, 2009 | Reply

    • Absolutely. I’ll be reviewing each individual team’s draft beginning on Friday, with a view towards signability, talent, and draft value per slot.

  6. The Astros just got your guy Raul Rivera in the 37th round. Why do you think he fell so far? What did you see in him that made you take him higher?

    Comment by Tom | June 11, 2009 | Reply

    • Rivera was the highest-rated Puerto Rican prospect entering the spring, and he just fell due to some consistency issues. He’s still got a big arm. His brother is Saul Rivera, the Nationals reliever. The difference between the 37th and 17th round really isn’t that much, as both picks are just for organizational reasons. It’s just that I wanted to lock him up before he was actually picked, which could have been anywhere from round ten to fourty.

  7. There is a report now that Scheppers has a 50% tear of his labrum which requires surgery. The Rangers reportedly knew of that when drafting him, does that alter your decision at 44? Having known that would you still have chosen him there?
