Discussion Question

Assuming Bryce Harper is not eligible for the 2010 draft, who do you pick at #1 overall?  I’d be looking at a number of players for that distinction, and almost all of them have noticeable flaws. But my pick is Anthony Ranaudo of LSU, simply for the safety in that pick. I considered UNC’s Matt Harvey, A.J. Cole of the Florida prep ranks, as well as Texas prep pitcher Jameson Taillon. Among hitters, profiled outfielder Bryce Brentz is an option, as are Fullerton’s shortstop Christian Colon, Miami’s catcher Yasmani Grandal (who has been horrible with Team USA), and Tennessee’s Blake Forsythe.

Who’s your #1 pick for 2010?

  1. How about Trey Griffin, SS / OF Huge power threat out of the Georgia high school ranks

    • There’s plenty of things to like about him. The tools are probably the best in the class. However, like most prep bats, he’s got a lot to prove during his senior year to warrant a #1 overall selection, as players like Tim Beckham and Delmon Young have done in the past. If he shows that advanced refinement that rare top prep bats do, then he’s certainly in the discussion, but as Buster Posey showed last year, one breakout year from a college bat can threaten even the most athletic, toolsy prep player’s draft position at the top. Griffin’s just got to work at key things like pitch recognition and consistency.

As a side note, I’ll be seeing Griffin at least a few times before the draft next year, so he’s one of the prospects that will be profiled more on here.

  2. Not sure about what scouts say about his defensive game, but I am big on Colon

  3. I’m not sure who I would pick at the moment, but I’m wondering if these guys will get any consideration:

Drew Pomeranz – I assume the biggest concern here is the abuse that he’s taken already. His K numbers for Team USA are insane (limited sample size of course).

Kyle Blair – Solid sophomore season and following it up with a solid Cape Cod season. I’ve only seen him pitch once (it was the Compton game on the MLB network), and he was fighting wildness in that game.

Sammy Solis – His stock was rapidly rising (at least it seemed that way from what I read at BA) to start the 2009 season, but then went down to injury.

Thanks Andy, and I’m looking forward to more draft reviews and 2010 profiles.
