Good work on Travis Harrison there. What do you see in DeAndre Smelter? He’s mostly just an arm-strength guy for me.
Yeah, I just love the arm strength and lack of a strong commitment. He’ll be in pro ball a year from now. With a special arm, he might be a shutdown closer or possible #2 or 3 with time. The chances aren’t high, but with the volume of picks I have, I want to go with high-ceiling guys.
Andy you got a couple total steals here, Harrison is one of the best pure hitters in the ’11 class and Smelter has a ton of raw ability and could be special if he puts everything together, also I forget who took him but Taillon was a great pick as late as he went as well.
Whoops meant Covey not Taillon as a sleeper, although I think Taillon was a good pick among the first 15.

As a point of interest, it seems you really favor drafting guys who are farther out, and therefore carry much more risk. 5/6 players you chose are from next year’s draft, and one is from 2011. Don’t you think that you need to balance your approach and tamp down some of the picks to reflect guys who are more mature and perhaps, drafted in 2009? Your strategy could end up with you holding a lot of empty cups come 2011…and even less that are worth trading for if your team ends up contending and you want to swing a deadline deal to push you over the top..but just an observation
I’m purposefully shooting always for the high-upside guys, regardless of draft year. Since I have more of a knowledge advantage for 2010 and 2011, I use that to pull guys that should go higher in lower rounds. The reason I’m really taking advantage of this is that I’ve started out with a top five farm system as it is. I have Neftali Feliz, Martin Perez, Justin Smoak, etc. from the Rangers’ system, so I decided to really shoot for a very large number of high-ceiling players.
My plan is working very well so far. I’ve got a number of picks left, too. I think I’ll end up with either the top draft in terms of pure talent or in the top three. The A’s and Reds are giving me a run for my money right now.
